"Walking Home is an ongoing portrait of my hometown which I have been photographing over the past 17 years. Being a non-driver to this day, I typical arrive and depart via train. The house I grew up in - where my parents still live - is about 3 miles from the train station. I almost always walk home, inevitably revisiting the haunts of my youth along the way: old friend’s houses, my elementary school, the street my highschool sweetheart lived, and some of the houses along my old paper route to name a few. Much of my hometown feels like a living museum to me, however, upon closer inspection - or perhaps introspection? - the rift between the past and the present becomes palpable. My friends don’t live here anymore. My parents are getting older. I can’t knock on many doors and find a familiar face on the other side. While no place could be more allegedly familiar or intimate, I am often caught off guard by how distant and strange ‘home’ feels as time goes on. Walking Home continues my exploration of the photography book and its unique capacity to articulate complex narratives through carefully edited and sequenced collections of images."
